- Al Mansoori: Striking similarities between the values on which the first Islamic state was founded on and our modern communities
Dubai, January 26, 2010: Under the Patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Watani – the Dubai organisation responsible for the promotion of the UAE's national identity and practices of good citizenship - is staging the ‘Citizenship in Islam’ Exhibition from January 27 to February 2, 2010, at Dubai Festival City. The exhibition is designed to shed light on the concept of good citizenship and community development during the era of Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him), and illustrate the ways in which many of these concepts still form the basis of the region’s contemporary communities.
His Excellency Ahmed Obaid Al Mansoori, Director General of Watani, said:
“This event reflects the objectives of Watani programme by highlighting the practices and origins of good citizenship. Responsible citizenship in essence talks about the role of the members of the community play in building our nations and communities.
“There are many lessons we can learn from our past, and from the way the first state in Islam was established. This exhibition highlights those aspects of societal development from centuries ago that today still form the heart of successful, developing communities around the region and around the world. By connecting with our heritage, we can discover more about the role of the individual and the community in creating a young nation – and these insights will help the UAE as a young nation to grow and build its capacity.”
The exhibition sheds light on the establishment of Al Madinah as the capital of the Islamic state, and focuses on different aspects of its development including its innovative legislation like the Charter of the Islamic Alliance and the Al Madinah constitution; the setting up of conflict-free zone agreements and economic developments including the foundation of free trade zones.
Featuring slides, animated films and other exhibits, the exhibition is designed to appeal to non-Arabic speakers, something organisers Watani believe is central to fostering cultural integration – a good citizenship value that was held in high esteem in the first Islamic community of Al Madinah. The exhibition also details the ideal governance of the Prophet (peace be upon him) aimed at achieving harmony among different cultures and religions.
The exhibition is organized in cooperation with the Al Madinah Research and Studies Center, which specializes in historic Al Madinah studies, with exhibition materials available in both Arabic and English.
