- Observership program provides valuable exposure to young Emirati allied health professionals
Harvard Medical School Dubai Center Institute for Postgraduate Education and Research (HMSDC), a member of Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Academic Medical Center, a part of Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC), a member of Tatweer, in collaboration with the Sharjah Womens college (HCT) selected six UAE women students for a three week training and observership scholarship at Harvard’s affiliated hospitals in Boston, United States.
The HMSDC observership program, which ran from 7 July – 1 August, allowed the senior students to be trained in some of the world’s best hospitals, the Harvard affiliated hospitals in Boston. It also provided them with a broad interdisciplinary approach to their studies while facilitating intensive interaction with the Harvard medical faculty and students.
The students, Asma Mohamed Al Harmoudi and Eman Ali Al Ali, attended the program at Kessler Health Education Library, a part of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where they had an opportunity to present the Arabic translation of the book “Mayo Clinic on Diabetes” during the BookTalk Program.
Other students included Asma Ahmed Al Ali and Asma Adel Al Nuami, who are currently pursuing a degree in Medical Laboratory Technology at SWC. Both were enrolled in the Blood Bank program at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), while Nada Murad Al Balooshi and Alya Mohsen Al Hossani acquired latest updates on innovations in Health Information Management techniques at MGH.
Dr. Ayesha Abdullah, Senior Vice President of DHCC, said: “The sponsorship initiative provides a unique opportunity for students to be involved in a highly engaging medical program. The opportunity to work at such prestigious academic hospitals and participate in research conducted in Boston will add immense value to the knowledge base of our students keen on furthering their study in academic medicine."
Dr. Zahra Baalawi, Director of Education, HMSDC, said: “HMSDC is extremely proud of the students for being selected and successfully completing the prestigious program. These young women were exposed to expert training in their respective fields, and have brought back knowledge and skill to the region.”
Supported by HMSDC and DHCC, the observership program reflects the commitment of these institutions in investing in young potential nationals to develop the healthcare field in the region. HMSDC has offered these observerships, to Sharjah Women''s College (SWC) students, for the second year in a row, after the immense success witnessed with last year’s program.
HMSDC is a joint initiative of Partners Harvard Medical International (PHMI) and DHCC. The CME programs, led by senior Harvard Medical School faculty, are an integral part of its endeavor to develop DHCC into a centre of excellence for healthcare delivery, education and research.
