Trading Enterprises, a member of the Al-Futtaim Group and sole distributor for Honda Outboard Marine engines in the UAE, presented trophies to the winners of the two day sailing regatta held at the Mina Seyhai, Dubai International Marine Club.
The annual regatta which took place on 18 and 25 January has been sponsored through Trading Enterprises – Honda, for over 10 years, providing sailors as young as eight years of age the opportunity to compete.
Guy Edmunds, General Manager, Trading Enterprises – Honda, commented:
“The regatta is an important event for the sailing community because it nurtures young talent and encourages healthy competition between the experienced and young sailors. With the growth of marine sport in line with the overall development of the UAE, we hope our support will encourage the increase in UAE sailors and ultimately participation in international sailing events."
Divided into the four sailing classes of lasers, double handed dingys, performance and classic catamarans, adults and youngsters battled it out each day over a series of four races against the clock.
Securing first place in the categories were: Catamaran Performance – Peter Eldridge and Jan Felton; Catamaran Classic – Joost and Stephanie Bloemearts; Laser Senior – Nick Fisk; Laser Youth – Frederic Jacobs and Double Handed – Max and Alex Buerger. Eager teenage sailors Tom Hemingway and Guy Wolfenden sailed into third place in the Double Handed race in their Honda sponsored 29 foot monohull.
All first, second and third place winners received special Honda crystal trophies.
Sharon Allison, RYA Principal, stated: “Open to all UAE residents, the regatta is a great kick start to the new centre. The continued support received from Honda means the club is very active and as such attracts increased interest. Our long term relationship actually extends further to the use of the reliable Honda 4-stroke engines in our safety boats - the event is whole heartedly Honda supported."
The annual regatta took place for the second time at the Mina Seyhai, following the relocation of the Jebel Ali Sailing Club in 2006. Members have since joined the Dubai International Marine Club which is part of the UAE Marine Sports Federation. Over the years, Dubai International Marine Club has hosted an unprecedented number of local and international watersports events that has rightfully earned it the title of "The home of Watersports in Dubai". From its humble beginnings as a small harbour, Mina Seyahi has grown to accommodate a fully fledged leisure hub featuring a 268 berth Marina, a Yacht Club, The Le Meridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina and soon the doors open to the latest edition, the spectacular The Westin – Dubai, Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina.
